Jewellery making Workshops

Have you ever wanted to try silversmithing? or want to develop existing jewellery and metalwork skills?

Our fun, warm and informative workshops are a brilliant way to connect with the craft of jewellery making.

What makes our workshops stand out?

Our class size is limited to 6-8 people so you always have plenty of contact with the tutor.

At Silver & Steel all of the silver and gold we use in our jewellery workshops is recycled either in house from workshop scrap or from our supplier who sells recycled precious metals.

A central Bristol location, ramp access street facing space and brilliant public transport links.

Under 18s are welcome if accompanied by an adult on another ticket.
(please let us know beforehand as we have extra paperwork)

We welcome participants with accessibility needs and are happy to adjust the class accordingly provided that the participant is able to work safely.

If joining an 8 week course, you can make up missed classes in our Thursday drop in.

All our workshops use Sterling Silver unless otherwise stated, Gold is available on request.

Please note: there is a 14 day Cancellation deadline. Within 14 days we can reschedule your appointment but we cannot refund you.

Meet the Tutors

    Bethany

    FOUNDER

    Beth is the jeweller behind both Silver & Steel and her personal jewellery brand Bethany May Silver. Down to earth and welcoming Bethany loves sharing her passion for jewellery making with makers of all levels. Having learnt from Alice Goldsack in 2017-2019, herself a student of the prominent Diana Porter, and Jessica Turrell; Beth cares deeply about the silversmithing culture and community in Bristol and has taught people of all ages and abilities. Bethany is an experienced creative workshop teacher, educator and trainer who spent time living and teaching integrative curriculums abroad before coming to Bristol and learning the jewellery making craft. She will ensure the experience is fun, memorable and participants leave feeling empowered.

    Maxine

    COURSE TUTOR

    Max is an experienced jeweller, with over 10 years experience within design, making and teaching. Graduating with a BA in Silversmithing in 2009 at Plymouth University of Arts, Maxine then went on to work as Technician for the Jewellery & Metals Studios where she studied, supporting students in their learning for their degrees. In the last 4 years Maxine worked alongside other talented jewellers at Diana Porter where she deepened her knowledge about jewellery design. Her experience in making alongside her patient and supportive teaching style will help you feel creative and confident when beginning to learn how to make jewellery.

    Rosie

    WEEKEND TASTER WORKSHOP HOST

    Rosie has been working in the jewellery industry for 7 years, studying her craft at Plymouth College of Art, moving back to her hometown of Birmingham where she was an Artist In Residence at Birmingham School of Jewellery for a year, and became an assistant lecturer, supporting students in their creative development.

    She gained the scientific precisions that come with working in a casting foundry in the quarter before moving to Bristol to develop her skills as a full time Goldsmith.

    Rosie brings her experience guiding students, combined with her own creative flair to deliver practical, expert and inspiring workshops.

    Rebecca

    WEEKEND TASTER WORKSHOP HOST

    Rebecca is a resident maker at Silver & Steel and is passionate about learning. She first started her jewellery journey in Bristol with evening classes and continued her studies in Berlin with Susanne Matsché, when she moved in 2020. Since returning to Bristol she has completed a Diploma in Silver Jewellery with the Jewellers Academy and makes and sells through the gallery. As a self-proclaimed life-long student and former academic, with a PhD in Geography, Rebecca has an experimental attitude towards craft and adores contemporary jewellery. As well as hand fabrication Rebecca creates pieces using the ancient process of lost wax casting and is developing her skills in contemporary filigree.

    Rebecca has over 10 years of teaching in different contexts, including academia and as a yoga teacher which she has been teaching for the last 8 years. She has a considered approach with an interest in design and will gently guide participants to make their very own handmade silver rings.

    Sam

    JEWELLER COACH

    Sam studied 3D design craft at Plymouth University with a focus on jewellery and metalwork.

    He then moved to London to work for the internationally renowned Great Frog. He worked for two years on production for retail and then moved up to be workshop manager. After 3 years running a busy international studio he left to focus on his own already successful jewellery brand.

    Sam is incredibly technically minded and has a strong manufacturing background. He is offering one to one sessions in our studio room for jewellers to upskill in their personal practice.

    Steve

    WAX CARVING TUTOR

    Steve began learning jewellery making from Alice Goldsack in Bristol over 10 years ago. He has had a successful jewellery brand, Captain Grimace, for the last 6. He began teaching and sharing his skillset with others a few years ago and is now our go to wax tutor.

    He is known for his recognisable wax carving style and has a loyal customer base for his unusual designs and bespoke work. Steve creates intricate carvings using blue and green wax, focusing on reductive processes, realistic detail and a high finish. He also experiments with making his own moulds and will connect participants with brilliant independent casters.

    Classes with Steve will leave participants walking away with lots of tool ideas, tricks and tips to help their individual wax carving journey!
